How the Framework Works

1. What We Evaluate

Every platform is assessed across 11 categories covering AI, design, catalog management, mobile checkout, sales features, marketing, automation, performance, ecosystem, usability/value, and Enterprise & Operations (Finance, HR, ERP, PMS, POS).

2. Why Each Criterion Matters

Each of the 55 criteria was chosen because it materially affects whether a merchant can launch, run and scale a real business — not because it's easy to measure. Vanity metrics are excluded.

3. How Scores Are Calculated

Each criterion is scored 0–10. The five criteria in a category are averaged into that category's score, which is then multiplied by its weight (below) and summed into the platform's Overall score.

4. How Category Weighting Works

Categories are weighted by how much they influence real-world outcomes in 2026 commerce. AI (18%) and Mobile & Checkout (14%) carry the most weight; Performance and Ecosystem (4% each) the least, since most major platforms have converged on baseline reliability.

5. How Pricing Is Evaluated

We model total cost of ownership across small, medium and large store scenarios rather than headline monthly price alone, since apps, transaction fees and plan upgrades change the real number significantly.

6. How Mobile Experience Is Evaluated

We assess mobile shopping usability, cart clarity, checkout friction, payment options and mobile-specific checkout optimizations — the categories most directly tied to mobile conversion rates.

7. How AI Capabilities Are Evaluated

We look for genuine AI store creation, theme/design generation, content generation, business automation and merchandising intelligence — distinguishing real functionality from marketing language.

8. How Checkout Friction Is Evaluated

We count unnecessary steps, required account creation, and payment method breadth, since each additional step measurably reduces checkout completion.

9. How Integrations Are Evaluated

We evaluate the depth of the app ecosystem, API access, and native integrations across payments, marketing and business systems like ERP and accounting.

10. How Updates Are Handled

Rankings are refreshed when a platform ships a major feature, changes pricing meaningfully, or when our own methodology changes — each such change is logged publicly on our Corrections page.
